Glen Johnson has been a Franchise Owner and Area Developer with Tropical Smoothie Cafe for several years, and we are happy to announce that he has now opened a Cafe in Norman, Oklahoma. Glen owns over 20 Tropical Smoothie Cafe locations throughout Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma, and he has just signed an agreement to open 20 more Cafes in the next few years. It has been a great year for Glen, as he was a featured speaker at this spring’s Multi-Unit Franchising Conference, where he spoke about how to successfully grow a business, and he was also a nominee for Tropical Smoothie Cafe’s Franchisee of the Year Award. Along with his impressive Cafe growth, Glen is a true TSC brand fan.

“I wanted a new business opportunity that I would be proud to bring to my community. With Tropical Smoothie Cafe, I know I am providing delicious food to my customers. I feel great bringing my daughter into my Cafe for a healthy smoothie.”

It’s dedicated Franchise Owners that make the Tropical Smoothie Cafe brand grow, and we could not be more excited for Glen’s successes!

QSRThe franchise industry is crowded with options, but thankfully QSR Magazine is here to help. Annually, they endure the hard work of sorting through the competition to find the best of the best. They base their research on a wide range of factors including franchisee satisfaction surveys, management team experience, litigation history, average startup costs, unit growth, marketplace niche, momentum, and more, then compile a list of the top 10 franchise deals in the industry.

We are honored to have landed a spot on this year’s list. The article credits CEO Mike Rotondo with giving Tropical Smoothie Cafe a renewed energy through his efforts in engaging Franchise Owners, incorporating technology to establish ease throughout the system, and helping the brand reach the highest Average Unit Volume (AUV) in its 19 year history.

Over the last two years, the brand opened nearly 130 new locations, signed agreements to open 200 more locations across the U.S., and celebrated the opening of their 500th location just last month.

Rotondo and his team aren’t stopping there as they lead efforts on the release of a mobile ordering and payment app and a cafe management tool to help drive store sales, traffic and profitability.

It’s been an awesome year for Tropical Smoothie Cafe and we are proud to place this award in our virtual trophy case next to other recent awards:

Navy Vet Uses Military Skills to Become a Successful Tropical Smoothie Franchise Owner

Military Times releases an annual list of the best franchise opportunities for veterans based on company culture, performance, costs, and support offered to veterans and their families. This year, Tropical Smoothie is proud to be recognized as a 2017 Best for Vets franchise, one of only three other restaurant brands to make the list. Meet one of our veteran Franchise Owners – Kaleb Warnock.

Prior to becoming a Tropical Smoothie Cafe Franchise Owner, Kaleb Warnock served in the United States Navy for five years. After returning home to El Paso, he learned the city was ranked as the #1 unhealthiest in the U.S. and wanted to bring a positive change to the area.

Originally planning to open an independent smoothie restaurant, he and his wife liked the support a larger brand could offer. Things started coming together when Kaleb saw a Forbes article touting Tropical Smoothie Cafe as the #1 Food and Smoothie franchise in the U.S. After calling the Franchise team to inquire, he learned the brand was military-friendly, offering 50% off the franchise fee to veterans. Furthermore, he was impressed with the customer service of the Franchise team, the recent rebranding efforts, and their comprehensive training program.

“With the step-by-step training we received, we learned what would normally take five years in just five months. We feel very fortunate to be in a franchise system that is run like Tropical Smoothie,” Warnock said. They opened their first location in El Paso in 2015 and plan to have three more open by next spring because of their dedication to the brand.

“We knew our idea was making a difference when customers began regularly thanking us for opening in El Paso, telling us how much the area needed a concept like ours,” Kaleb said.

Describing his wife, Patricia, as “phenomenal”, Kaleb explained the crucial role she plays in the success of their restaurant. She runs the day-to-day business, working hard to build an environment where employees and customers alike want to spend their time. He is the motivator and visionary of the store, using his attention to detail – a skill the Navy helped strengthen – to recognize what’s being run efficiently and flagging anything that needs attention.

Another skill that serves him well is the leadership mentality the Navy instilled in him. When managing his team of employees, it’s important to him to be able to lead them toward a common goal and to train them so everyone can help in different roles.

“After the Navy, I wanted to use the skills I’d learned to do something good for the El Paso area. Tropical Smoothie Cafe allowed us to bring a healthier alternative concept to the area, backed by a proven system, and extremely friendly military benefits. We haven’t looked back and look forward to growing with the brand,” said Kaleb.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe Pledges Support for Veterans at Marine Corps Marathon

Tropical Smoothie Cafe would like to congratulate all the runners at this year’s Marine Corps Marathon (MCM)! Marking the fourth year of sponsoring the event, Tropical Smoothie was proud to support the marathoners and fuel them with smoothies. Helping people live a healthy life is a core pillar of the brand, making this event particularly fitting.

MCM is held annually in Arlington, Virginia and crosses over into Washington D.C. The marathon’s mission is to promote physical fitness, generate community goodwill, and showcase the United States Marine Corps. Sharing in this mission, the anticipated event gives Franchise Owners a chance to share their fresh fruit smoothies to rehydrate athletes post-race and congratulate them on the hard work that goes into a marathon and its training.

This year, two Tropical Smoothie Franchise Owners, Dennis and Nicole Drake, spoke about their experience at the Marine Corps Marathon and what it means to them to be able to be involved. As a Navy veteran himself, Dennis looks particularly forward to this event as a way to use his Tropical Smoothie location to give back to the community.

“When you get an opportunity to support an event like this, it’s moving. Looking out over the waves and waves of folks and knowing their support—whether financial, for a loved one, or for the event—it is going to a worthwhile cause,” Dennis said.

Emily Harrington has long been seen as a trailblazer in the franchise and foodservice industry. Turning to franchising after serving as a Signal Corps Officer in the U.S. Army, she built her empire of 42 successful Hardee’s restaurants.

Now, we are excited to announce that Harrington’s next venture is with Tropical Smoothie Cafe, signing franchise agreements to expand the Tampa market. She purchased two existing Cafes in Tampa and will open an additional four in the area over the next several years, with her ultimate goal to own at least 50 Cafes.

“As a single mother and business owner, I know all too well how difficult it can be to eat healthy while on the go. I was determined to join a foodservice brand that focuses on making nutritious and delicious food convenient for today’s modern consumer. As a brand that is committed to doing just that and is consistently named as one of the top franchise opportunities for veterans, Tropical Smoothie Cafe was the obvious choice to me,” said Harrington. “From its unique, better-for-you products to its exceptional business model with a proven track record of success, this brand is a standout in the foodservice industry and offers immense potential for franchisees. I’m thrilled to be part of the Tropical Smoothie Cafe family and to be coming onboard at a time where the company is positioned for immense growth.”

We are excited to welcome Harrington to Tropical Smoothie Cafe and look forward to the growth we will experience together.
